Best Paperback (Mostly) Fantasy Fiction Books You Probably Haven’t Read…Yet

  • Featherstroke: Sydney Van Scyoc, Avon Books, March 1989, ISBN: 0-380-75438-X
slow to get started, but focuses a girl, a war, and a hawk. Extremely well-crafted
  • The High House: James Stoddard, Aspect Fiction, Dec. 1998, ISBN: 0-446-60679-0
a miracle of originality, deep symbolism, and just plain fun.
  • The Book of Night with Moon: Diane Duane, Aspect Fiction, Dec. 1997, ISBN: 0-446-67302-1
a non-precious, very moving, cat-focused fantasy/adventure novel with a lot of Egyptian folklore thrown in
  • The List of 7: Mark Frost, Avon, April 2005, ISBN: 0-38072-019-1
Fantastic Holmesian fantasy/adventure story by the co-creator of Twin Peaks. Excellent, but not too brutal or weird for weirdness’ sake
  • The Poison Master: Liz Williams, Tor, June 2004, ISBN: 0-33041-248-5
Splendid sci-fi about a girl making her way in a new society on a very interesting planet; feminist without being annoying or overt
  • Captain Alatriste: Arturo Perez-Reverte, Plume, Dec. 2005, ISBN: 0-45228-711-1
Who D’Artagnan wishes he was. An exellent adventure from one of the world’s greatest living authors. Read The Fencing Master, too, an unrelated, but similar, tale.
  • Split Infinity: Piers Anthony, Del Rey, Oct. 1987, ISBN: 0-34535-491-5
Can’t decide if you want to read a fantasy or some science-fiction? Try this one–it’s both. Worth reading for the description of The Game, every game-lover’s Heaven, where you can play any game or sport known to humanity and then some.
  • An Instance of the Fingerpost: Iain Pears, Riverhead Trade, Dec. 2000, ISBN: 1-57322-795-1
Is it a murder mystery, a psychological thriller, or a cautionary tale for academics? In any case, it’s just plain interesting, well-written, and engrossing.
