In Magnolia Pictures’ new documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, filmmaker David Gelb chronicles Jiro-san’s single-minded obsession with raw fish and follows him on his lifelong quest to elevate the edible into an art form. The film, which opens March 9, looks to leave both your stomach and your soul hungry for more.

2. Shunryu Suzuki was a Zen master whose books helped popularize Zen Buddhism in America. A student once asked him, “How much ego do you need?” His austere reply was “Just enough so that you don’t step in front of a bus.”

3. In this passage from Still Life with Woodpecker, Tom Robbins provides a hot tip you should keep in mind:
“There are essential and inessential insanities. Inessential insanities are a brittle amalgamation of ambition, aggression, and pre-adolescent anxiety–garbage that should have been dumped long ago. Essential insanities are those impulses one instinctively senses are virtuous and correct, even though peers may regard them as coo-coo.”

8. From the TokyoPop mailing list: “Apple of My i – If you’re an otaku member of the Cult of Jobs, then get ready to take a celebratory sip of Kool-Aid because Apple’s iBooks service has added a manga section featuring titles from Seven Seas Entertainment, Yen Press and manga-style educational books from publisher Japanime. By the way, if no one else has thought of it yet, we’re calling dibs on ‘iTaku’.”

I want to use geek-related patches, like this one: http://www.stickergiant.com/imperial-walker_spsw62.html

But I can’t decide what to put them ON. Do I want to use a pleather base like hers, the classic pilot jacket? Do I want to use the modern MA-1 ripstop modern pilot’s jacket? Or go softer with a black hoodie or something? It’s just not cold enough here for a heavy jacket that much of the year, but I don’t want it to look lame. :/

Thoughts?

From http://thefridayfive.livejournal.com/

Comics!.
1. What is your favourite movie based on a comic book?
Hmm, probably The Dark Knight or Watchmen. I tend to like them all fairly indiscriminately; I’m a bad fangirl.

2. What comic book superhero’s powers would you like to have, and why?
I’d have to say those of Meggan from Excalibur because she’s an empath, and this allows her to heal and talk to animals, as well as any person who needs help.

3. Who do you think is the best dressed comic book villain?
Assuming I can also use manga, and not just American comics, I’d say Sebastian from Black Butler. Otherwise, I’d have to go with Dracula or the Penguin… or Poison Ivy, though I guess she’s more UN-dressed. Though there’s something about Winter Soldier’s gear I find spiffy.

4. Who do you think is the best comic hero’s sidekick?
Arthur of course! (The Tick)

5. Which comic superhero would you most like to see destroyed by their archnemesis?
Hrm. I’m not a huge fan of Emma Frost; I liked her more when she was the White Queen and wore a more aesthetically pleasing tramp outfit, instead of her current UGLY tramp outfit.

But even more, I’d love to see Dr. Doom take out that Arrogant Guy with the stretchy powers… Doom 4ever!
